Aliplast at Milano Beauty Week 2024: beauty in the sign of sustainability

03 October 2024

From 25 to 29 September, Aliplast took part in the third edition of Milano Beauty Week, the initiative of Cosmetica Italia, in collaboration with Cosmoprof and Esxence, which this year had sustainability as one of its guiding themes, together with innovation, inclusion and emotion.

A presence that represents a further step forward in the consolidation of a path that Aliplast has been sharing for several years with Cosmetica Italia - the national association of cosmetics companies, engaging in an intense research activity also in the service of sustainable packaging in the health & beauty sector.

The one with Cosmetica Italia is a collaboration that has been going on since 2018, under the sign of the propensity to innovate: Cosmetica Italia to reduce the environmental footprint of the beauty supply chain, Aliplast to increasingly raise the quality of recycled plastic in Europe. Cosmetics, with its dynamism driven by aesthetic and functional research, is an excellent terrain for testing ever higher performance for regenerated plastic.

Never Ending Beauty: cosmetic packaging becomes recyclable

On the occasion of the week dedicated to the culture of beauty and well-being, ‘Never Ending Beauty’ was presented again at Palazzo Giureconsulti: a project that combines sustainability and innovation by celebrating circularity in the cosmetics sector.

The initiative made it possible to exchange empty and no-longer-usable cosmetics with new Milano Beauty Week branded products made available by companies in the cosmetics supply chain, the excellence of Made in Italy.

Among the products distributed was an innovative oil-to-milk micellar make-up remover contained in a prototype container made of recycled plastic and designed to be easily recyclable after use.

The packaging has been designed according to the indications of the white paperPlastic packaging in the cosmetics sector: a guide for a more circular production’ presented in 2023 by Cosmetica Italia and Aliplast, on the occasion of the second edition of Milano Beauty Week (it gathers practical indications to guide the sector towards fully recyclable plastic packaging).

The bottle is made of 100% recycled PET, produced by Aliplast, and processed by Eurovetrocap, and combines a number of features that favour recycling:

  • the main body in monomaterial PET;
  • the transparent colour shades that allow better quality recycling and are more easily intercepted by plastic sorters;
  • the targeted choice of polymers, which facilitate the separation of PET bottle and PE/PP cap;
  • the removable label at the recycling stage, provided by Eurolabel, which eliminates the need for silk-screening on the bottle that would worsen the quality of the recycled material.

The result is a circular container that also makes life easier for the consumer, because once the contents have been used up and emptied, simply dispose of it in the separate plastic collection without separating the cap or label.

The driving force behind the project was a working group that united the various players in the value chain (packaging manufacturer, product manufacturer, label manufacturer and plastic recycler) to arrive at a packaging that was originally conceived in a circular logic, bringing together industrial, environmental, functional and aesthetic requirements.

‘The circular cosmetic container prototype realised together with Cosmetica Italia is another very important step in the long-term partnership between Aliplast and the Association’ - explains Michele Petrone, Aliplast CEO - ’Its value is twofold. On the one hand, it represents a technical benchmark for the circularity of cosmetic packaging, which will certainly contribute to the further evolution of the sector towards sustainability. On the other, with this product we have pioneered an innovation model that involves all players in the supply chain in designing the life cycle of packaging, according to European best practices'.
